Esomus metallicus
Also known as: Metallic Flying Barb, Metallic Danio, Metallic Esomus
Origin: Thailand / Malaysia
Esomus metallicus, the Metallic Flying Barb or Metallic Danio, is closely related to the Flying Barb (E. danricus) and shares its characteristic elongated pectoral fins and surface-dwelling lifestyle. It is native to Thailand, Malaysia, and surrounding regions, typically inhabiting still or slow-moving waters such as rice paddies, ponds, and the margins of larger rivers.
It is distinguished from E. danricus by its more prominent metallic lateral stripe, which catches the light with a brighter silver or golden sheen. The body is slim and streamlined, and like its relative it is an accomplished leaper that demands a covered aquarium. In a group it is a lively and graceful upper-level swimmer.
The Metallic Esomus is somewhat more commonly available in Southeast Asian markets than in European and American aquarium shops, but specialist importers periodically offer it. Its care is essentially identical to that of the Flying Barb, and the two species can be kept together successfully.
Water: Temperature 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, GH 5–15; adaptable and hardy; secure lid is the top priority. Tank: Minimum 80 L; tight-fitting lid essential; surface space important; gentle current; moderate planting. Feeding: Floating flake and pellets at the surface; live daphnia, small bloodworm, and brine shrimp accepted with enthusiasm. Breeding: Egg-scatterer over surface plants; follows same approach as E. danricus; relatively straightforward. Compatibility: Peaceful with all community fish at lower levels; mixes well with Flying Barb; avoid aggressive or nippy species.
