Metriaclima pyrsonotos
Also known as: Pyrsonotos Mbuna, Barred Zebra
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Metriaclima pyrsonotos is a mbuna native to the rocky shorelines of Lake Malawi, identified by its bold blue body and clearly defined dark vertical bars running along the flanks. Males are more intensely coloured, developing richer blues and deeper black barring during dominant display. Females are typically a drab brownish to pale grey.
Like other Metriaclima, this species is strictly herbivorous in the wild, grazing Aufwuchs algae from rock surfaces. It occupies shallow to mid-depth rocky habitat and is strongly territorial. A harem structure is recommended in captivity — one dominant male maintained with three or more females in a tank with abundant rockwork. The species is a reliable maternal mouthbrooder, with females carrying fry for 21–28 days. Aquarium water should replicate the hard, alkaline conditions of Lake Malawi for optimal health and colouration.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.8–8.5, hard (GH 10–25, KH 6–15); add Rift Lake salts to soft tap water. Tank: Minimum 200 L; provide dense rockwork from substrate to waterline, creating multiple cave territories. Feeding: Algae-based diet — spirulina flake, spirulina pellets, and algae wafers; restrict meaty foods. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; female broods for 21–28 days; separate brooding female to a quiet recovery tank. Compatibility: Suitable for mixed mbuna tanks; avoid peacocks, haps, or gentle species that will be bullied.
