Cambarellus montezumae
Also known as: Mexican Dwarf Crayfish, Montezuma Dwarf Crayfish
Origin: Central Mexico
Cambarellus montezumae is a mottled grey-brown dwarf crayfish native to central Mexican highland rivers. It is well-adapted to cooler water temperatures and has a calmer temperament than most crayfish, making it one of the better candidates for mixed community tanks. It stays under 4cm and will coexist with most fish that cannot swallow it whole.
Water: 18–25°C, pH 7.0–8.0; cooler temperatures preferable; moderate hardness. Tank: Minimum 40L with caves, smooth rocks, and leaf litter for shelter. Feeding: Sinking pellets, blanched greens, frozen foods; will consume any decaying matter. Behaviour: Generally calmer than other crayfish; active day and night; moults periodically. Compatibility: Compatible with medium-sized peaceful fish; avoid very small or very slow tankmates.
