Hymenosomatidae sp.
Also known as: Micro Crab, Freshwater Micro Crab
Origin: Southeast Asia
Hymenosomatidae sp. Micro Crabs are among the smallest fully aquatic freshwater crabs available in the aquarium hobby, measuring barely 1.5 cm across the carapace. Unlike semi-terrestrial crabs, they spend their entire lives submerged and are completely harmless to plants, fish, and shrimp. They scavenge through mosses, leaf litter, and substrate for microorganisms and organic particles, making them excellent clean-up crew members for nano and shrimp tanks.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 6–15, KH 2–8; standard freshwater parameters adequate. Tank: minimum 20 L, fine substrate, Java moss, leaf litter, hiding crevices. Feeding: biofilm, micro-organisms, detritus, powdered foods; supplement with micro-pellets. Behaviour: shy and secretive; mostly active at night; completely aquatic. Compatibility: safe with shrimp and small peaceful fish; avoid large predatory fish.
