Amphilophus citrinellus
Also known as: Midas Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Amphilophus citrinellus is endemic to Lake Nicaragua and Lake Managua in Nicaragua, where it inhabits rocky shorelines and open water. The most celebrated feature of this species is its dramatic colour polymorphism — a significant proportion of individuals 'turn gold' at maturity, losing their dark barred pattern to become brilliant orange, yellow, or white. It is one of the parent species of the controversial Flowerhorn hybrid. Highly intelligent and responsive to its keeper.
Water: 24–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard (GH 10–20). Tank: 500L+ for adults; minimal decor — adults will redecorate; massive filtration required. Feeding: Omnivore; large quality pellets, earthworms, large frozen foods; daily feeding. Behaviour: Extremely aggressive and territorial; must be managed carefully even as a pair. Compatibility: Species-only or with equally large and robust cichlids; not for community tanks.
