Chelonodon patoca
Also known as: Pacific Milkspotted Puffer, Philippine Milkspot Puffer, Spotted Estuarine Puffer
Origin: Philippines and Indonesia (coastal brackish)
The Pacific form of Chelonodon patoca from Philippine and Indonesian coastal waters has broader spot spacing and a noticeably more rounded body profile than Indian Ocean specimens. Like all C. patoca it is strictly a brackish species as an adult, requiring measurable salinity for long-term health. It inhabits mangrove-lined tidal creeks, estuaries, and the lower reaches of coastal rivers. The aquarium should be spacious and decorated with salt-tolerant mangrove root or rock structures. Live rock can be incorporated for biological filtration in higher-salinity setups. This species is bold and inquisitive, quickly recognising its keeper at feeding time, which makes it a rewarding specimen despite the space and salinity demands.
Water: Brackish, SG 1.005–1.012, temperature 24–28°C, pH 7.5–8.5; robust filtration; protein skimmer at higher SG. Tank: 300 L minimum; sand or mixed substrate; mangrove root or rock décor; ample open swimming space. Feeding: Clams, mussels, crab, large prawns, snails; regular hard food for beak wear management. Breeding: No captive records; estuarine seasonal spawner. Compatibility: Aggressive adult; single specimen; consummate fin-nipper and predator of smaller fish.
