Aphyosemion mimbon
Also known as: Mimbon Killifish, Mimbon Lyretail
Origin: Cameroon
Aphyosemion mimbon is a non-annual killifish from a restricted locality in Cameroon. Males display vivid blue-green body colouration with extensive red spotting across the body and fins, and mature males develop lyretail caudal fin extensions that add elegance to their profile. The species is rarely encountered in the hobby and is maintained primarily through hobbyist exchange networks.
Soft, slightly acidic water is necessary for A. mimbon. A 40 L species tank with peat filtration, fine-leaved plants, and a spawning mop provides ideal conditions. Eggs deposited on the mop hatch after two to three weeks in damp peat. The species is sensitive to water quality deterioration, and regular water changes with appropriately soft water are required.
A. mimbon represents the kind of rare, locally endemic killifish that keeps specialist collectors engaged over the long term. Its attractive colouration and the challenge of maintaining a genuine rarity make it a satisfying addition to a dedicated killifish room.
Water: 20–24 °C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft water (GH 2–8) recommended. Tank: 40 L species tank with plant cover and dim lighting; spawning mop essential. Feeding: Live Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, micro worms; feed daily in small quantities. Breeding: Collect mop every 7–10 days; incubate in damp peat for 2–3 weeks. Compatibility: Species tank recommended; too sensitive for most community setups.
