Acanthurus pyroferus
Origin: Indo-Pacific
The Mimic Tang is celebrated for its juvenile phase, during which it closely mimics the Lemon Peel Angelfish (Centropyge flavissimus) in coloration and eye markings—a rare and fascinating case of interspecific mimicry among reef fish. As the fish matures, its coloration transitions to a muted brownish-orange with bluish scale edges. A moderately hardy tang that is less aggressive than many of its relatives and adapts well to established marine aquariums.
Requires a large aquarium with vigorous flow and extensive swimming space. Provide abundant live rock with encrusting and filamentous algae for grazing. Feed a varied diet of nori, spirulina-enriched foods, and marine-based frozen preparations. Acclimate carefully with a drip method.
