Acanthurus pyroferus
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Acanthurus pyroferus — the mimic surgeon or chocolate tang — undergoes a fascinating ontogenetic colour change. Juveniles mimic the colouration of Centropyge dwarf angels (particularly C. flavissimus or C. vrolikii) as a form of Batesian mimicry, transitioning to a chocolate-brown adult form as they mature. This transformation is one of the most interesting phenomena in marine biology observable in a home reef. Adults are robust and reef-safe algae grazers.
Tank: 300+ L. Feed: algae-based diet, nori daily. Fascinating juvenile mimicry stage. Reef-safe adults. Intermediate care.
