About

Kryptopterus minor is a small silurid from the blackwater river systems of Borneo (Kalimantan and Sarawak), closely resembling K. vitreolus but distinguishable by its shallower body depth and origin in significantly more acidic, soft water. It is frequently misidentified in the trade and may be sold under the glass catfish label alongside K. vitreolus. In the wild it forms schools in dark, tannin-stained rivers with dense overhanging vegetation.

In the aquarium, Kryptopterus minor is somewhat more tolerant of acidic conditions than K. vitreolus and performs well in blackwater setups with driftwood, leaf litter, and peat filtration. It still requires a school of six or more and excellent water quality, though it tolerates a lower pH range better than the Thai species. The combination of transparency and a dimly lit blackwater environment creates a hauntingly atmospheric display.

Feed with small frozen invertebrates — bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp — and small micro-pellets. This species pairs beautifully with Borneo-origin species such as small rasboras, chocolate gouramis, and Betta species in a biotope setup. Careful pH management and soft, clean water are the keys to long-term success.

Care Guide

Water: 22–28°C, pH 5.0–7.0, soft acidic water strongly preferred (GH 1–8). Tank: 80 L minimum; blackwater setup with tannins, leaf litter, and driftwood; low lighting. Feeding: Frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, micro-pellets; school encourages feeding. Breeding: Not achieved in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful; keep in schools of 6+; ideal with small Borneo rasboras and chocolate gouramis.
