Cyprinus carpio
Origin: Europe (captive bred)
The Mirror Carp is a domesticated variant of the Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) distinguished by large, irregularly scattered reflective scales over an otherwise scaleless body. Medium-grade specimens already exhibit their characteristic scale patterning and grow rapidly in well-nourished ponds. They are highly intelligent fish, capable of being trained to hand-feed, and develop individual personalities that make them favorites in Belgian garden pond culture.
Requires a large pond of at least 3000 L with good filtration, as Mirror Carp are heavy waste producers. Provide a mix of pond pellets and live invertebrates. They are hardy and overwinter well in Belgium. Protect young plants as carp will uproot them while foraging.
