Tetraodon miurus
Also known as: Upper Congo Potato Puffer, Upper Congo Ambush Puffer, Upstream Miurus
Origin: Upper Congo River tributaries, Central Africa
The upper Congo drainage form of Tetraodon miurus is collected from upstream tributaries above the main rapids system and presents a lighter, more sand-toned cryptic colouration compared to the darker lower-drainage morph, reflecting adaptation to the paler sandy substrates of headwater streams. This lighter colouration makes it particularly effective at concealment in fine light-coloured aquarium sand. Like all T. miurus it is a completely sedentary ambush predator that relies entirely on remaining buried and invisible until prey ventures within striking distance. The aquarium substrate must be deep, fine, and light-coloured to complement the fish's natural colouration and support normal burying behaviour. Water quality and flow requirements are identical to other T. miurus forms.
Water: pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 24–27°C, soft to moderate; excellent filtration; siphon substrate weekly. Tank: 80 L minimum; 8+ cm pale fine sand depth; no sharp decor; adequate biological filter capacity. Feeding: Live earthworms and shrimp trigger best feeding response; frozen prawns accepted; 2–3 times weekly. Breeding: Not documented in aquaria; wild seasonal Congo spawner. Compatibility: Solitary; lethal ambush strikes on any passing fish; no tankmates possible.
