Oryzias latipes
Also known as: Miyuki Medaka, Platinum Medaka, Deep Snow Medaka
Origin: Japan (cultivated variety)
The Miyuki ('deep snow') medaka is the result of a naturally occurring but subsequently fixed mutation in Oryzias latipes that produces elongated, plate-like reflective scales over the entire dorsal surface of the body. This creates a striking metallic mirror effect that dramatically outshines all other medaka varieties. It spawned an entirely new generation of 'hikari' (light-reflecting) medaka varieties in Japan.
Water: 10–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.5; extremely tolerant; mild brackish acceptable. Tank: 20 L minimum; best displayed over black substrate with overhead LED lighting. Feeding: Medaka pellets, quality flake, Daphnia, baby brine shrimp. Behaviour: Peaceful surface schooler; the mirror-like reflections are most visible when fish swim together. Compatibility: Can be kept with all other medaka varieties and small nano fish.
