Apistogramma moae
Origin: Brazil (lower Rio Negro / Solimões confluence)
Apistogramma moae is an uncommon, scientifically interesting dwarf cichlid from the flooded igapo forests of the lower Rio Negro and Solimões confluence in Brazil. Males are distinguished by a double lateral spot pattern and striking blue-green iridescence in the dorsal and caudal fins. In the wild it inhabits leaf litter in deeply tannin-stained, extremely soft blackwater. Providing near-blackwater conditions in captivity is essential for the species' wellbeing and breeding success.
Maintain very soft, acidic water using RO water conditioned with botanicals or peat. Provide a heavily planted aquarium with leaf litter substrate and subdued lighting. Feed frozen bloodworms, daphnia, and live foods. Best kept as a pair or in a harem with one male to multiple females.
