Mochokus niloticus
Also known as: Mochokus Niloticus, Nile Eel Catfish
Origin: Nile River basin
Mochokus niloticus is a taxonomic curiosity within the family Mochokidae, possessing a markedly elongated, almost eel-like body plan that sets it apart from the stout, deep-bodied Synodontis with which it shares the family. Native to the Nile River system, it is extremely uncommon in the aquarium hobby and is considered a true specialist's species.
In the aquarium it requires clean, well-oxygenated water and a setup that provides both open swimming areas and tight hiding places suited to its slender form. It is a secretive nocturnal species that rarely ventures out during daylight, making it a challenging but rewarding fish for patient aquarists.
Due to its extreme rarity in trade, little detailed husbandry information exists; treatment as for other medium Nile Synodontis with soft to moderately hard, neutral to slightly alkaline water is recommended.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 7.0–8.0, soft to moderately hard (GH 5–15, KH 2–10). Tank: 250 L minimum; elongated hiding tubes or narrow caves suited to its body form; strong water movement. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm and prawn; feeds mainly after lights-out. Breeding: Not documented in captivity; entirely unknown in home aquariums. Compatibility: Peaceful toward similarly sized or larger fish; extreme rarity demands careful housing in a dedicated setup.
