Polypterus mokelembembe
Also known as: Mokelembembe Bichir, Mokele Bichir
Origin: Central Congo basin, DRC
Polypterus mokelembembe is a small bichir described in 2006 from the central Congo basin of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its name references the mythical Mokèlé-mbèmbé, a legendary swamp creature of Central African folklore. Adults reach around 32cm and display a subdued olive-brown colouration with faint barring. Captive husbandry data is very limited, but the species appears to follow the standard polypterid care template: warm water, carnivore diet, surface access, and a secure lid. Its compact size makes it suitable for smaller setups than most polypterids. Rarely appears in the trade and usually commands a significant price when it does. A meaningful addition to any serious collection of ancient fish.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderate; clean and stable; 25% water change weekly. Tank: Minimum 160L, fine substrate, caves and hiding spots, extremely secure lid at all times. Feeding: Carnivore; live or frozen bloodworm, small earthworms, diced prawn; sinking micro-pellets once settled. Breeding: No captive breeding records; approach as for small polypterids generally. Compatibility: Peaceful with medium fish; small mouth reduces predation risk relative to larger bichirs.
