Pterois mombasae
Origin: Indian Ocean
The Mombasa Lionfish is one of the most elaborately patterned of all lionfish, displaying intricate brown and cream banding overlaid with vivid red and yellow highlights on its venomous spines. Named after the Kenyan port city near its collection range, it is less frequently encountered in the trade than the common Volitans Lionfish. Its commanding presence and spectacular finnage make it a centerpiece for large marine aquariums.
Handle with extreme caution—spines are venomous. House in a large aquarium with caves and overhangs for daytime retreat. Feed on frozen shrimp, silversides, and krill; wean off live feeder fish using a feeding stick. Keep with robust, similarly sized tank mates that cannot be swallowed.
