Sturisoma monopelte
Also known as: Monopelte Whiptail Catfish, Upper Orinoco Whiptail
Origin: South America (Venezuela — upper Orinoco tributaries)
Sturisoma monopelte is native to upper Orinoco tributaries in Venezuela and is of particular interest to ichthyologists and serious hobbyists for its distinctive morphological feature — a region of the body with notably reduced plate coverage compared to other Sturisoma species. This characteristic influenced its specific epithet and sets it apart in the genus.
In the aquarium, this species requires the same general care as other Sturisoma — clean, well-oxygenated water, driftwood and smooth hard surfaces for grazing, and a varied plant-based diet. Its rarity in the hobby means that husbandry data is limited, but experienced keepers of other Sturisoma species should find it manageable.
Imports of Sturisoma monopelte are infrequent and typically come as bycatch in broader Orinoco fish exports from Venezuela. Hobbyists who obtain this species should consider participating in captive breeding efforts to establish a sustainable population in the hobby.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderate (GH 3–12); good oxygenation and flow. Tank: 150 L minimum; driftwood and smooth stones; moderate water movement. Feeding: Algae wafers, spirulina, blanched courgette; supplement with live or frozen daphnia. Breeding: Presumed standard Sturisoma; limited captive breeding records available. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable for large South American community aquariums.
