Montipora digitata
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Montipora digitata in its orange branching form is arguably the most beginner-friendly SPS coral in the hobby, growing as clusters of delicate finger-like branches with vivid orange colouration and tiny polyps visible across each branch surface. It is extremely fast-growing under medium-high light and is commonly used as a 'tester' SPS to assess whether a reef system's parameters are SPS-ready before investing in more demanding Acropora specimens.
Medium PAR (150–250) acceptable; grows faster under high light. Moderate flow. Alk 8–10 dKH, Ca 400–450 ppm, temp 24–27°C. Very tolerant — will grow even in systems with elevated NO3 (up to 10 ppm). Snap branches for fragging; extremely fast to establish on new plugs. Watch for Montipora-eating nudibranchs (Phestilla sp.) — tiny white nudibranchs that graze on Montipora tissue. Monthly dipping as prevention.
