Gecarcinus sp. is a semi-terrestrial crab from Central America and the Caribbean, recognised by its dark purple-black carapace and vivid orange or yellow leg joints. It is primarily land-dwelling and requires a large, humid paludarium with diggable substrate, access to brackish water, and a very secure lid as it is an adept climber.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.5–8.5; provide both a freshwater and brackish soaking pool. Tank: Minimum 80L paludarium with deep sandy substrate, ample land area, and 80%+ humidity. Feeding: Fruit, leafy greens, dried fish, bloodworm, and cuttlebone for calcium. Behaviour: Primarily nocturnal and terrestrial; digs burrows and is shy during the day. Compatibility: Best kept in a dedicated species paludarium; not compatible with fish.
