Corydoras concolor
Also known as: Mosaic Cory, Plain Cory, Suapure Cory
Origin: Venezuela (Suapure River, Orinoco tributary)
Corydoras concolor is one of the more subtly coloured members of the genus — its body is a uniform grey-brown without the bold spots, stripes, or reticulation that characterise most Corydoras. This understated appearance is actually a hallmark that makes it instantly identifiable, and the species has a devoted following among cory enthusiasts who appreciate its clean, monochrome elegance.
Native to the Suapure River in Venezuela, a tributary of the lower Orinoco, it inhabits clear, moderately fast-moving water over sandy and rocky substrates in forest streams. Water is soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic. In the aquarium it is quite adaptable and tolerant of a range of water conditions.
C. concolor is peaceful and social, doing best in a group of six or more. It is an active daytime forager and is more visible than many shyer cory species. Its uniform colouration makes it an effective backdrop fish in mixed cory groups, where it contrasts nicely with more ornate species. Care is standard and beginner-accessible.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–26°C; adaptable to a range of community water parameters. Tank: 80 L with fine sand, some plant cover, and good water movement to replicate Orinoco tributary habitat. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, and Tubifex worms; a versatile and willing feeder. Breeding: Rarely bred; typical cory spawning method; cool water change and live food conditioning. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; pairs well with other cory species and peaceful Venezuelan fish.
