Poecilia reticulata var.
Also known as: Moscow Blue Female Guppy, Blue Moscow Female
Origin: Captive bred (Moscow lineage)
Female guppies are often overlooked in favour of the colourful males, but the Moscow Blue Female is an exception — her subtle iridescent blue body colouration makes her attractive in her own right, and she carries the genetic material that ensures the next generation of males will display full, vibrant Moscow Blue colouration.
In a breeding project, quality females are just as important as the males. This female is selected from lines with correct tail shape, robust body form, and good blue iridescence, all of which are transmitted to male offspring.
Females can live peacefully in community tanks and will drop fry regularly without dedicated breeding setups.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–20; consistent water quality reduces stress pregnancies. Tank: 60 L minimum; dense planting essential for fry survival if breeding is intended. Feeding: High-protein flake, frozen Daphnia, spirulina; 2–3 small meals daily supports gestation. Breeding: Livebearer; holds sperm for multiple broods; brood 20–60 fry every 4–6 weeks. Compatibility: Peaceful; males will court persistently — maintain 2:1 female-to-male ratio.
