Gambusia affinis
Also known as: Mosquitofish, Western Mosquitofish
Origin: North America
Gambusia affinis is native to the Gulf Coast of the United States and has been introduced globally for mosquito control. It is one of the hardiest fish known, surviving temperatures from near-freezing to 38°C and tolerating brackish water. Though aggressive toward fins and other small fish, it is a fascinating and robust species for dedicated setups.
Water: 10–30°C, pH 6.5–8.0, extremely adaptable; suitable for outdoor pond or tub keeping. Tank: 40L minimum, robust planting, avoid housing with long-finned or nano species. Feeding: Omnivore — mosquito larvae, flake, pellets, small invertebrates; grazes algae. Behaviour: Can be semi-aggressive and nippy toward other fish. Compatibility: Best kept with robust similar-sized species or as a single-species group.
