Gambusia affinis
Origin: North America (captive bred)
The Mosquitofish is a small, adaptable livebearer native to North America and widely introduced across Europe for biological mosquito control in ornamental and wildlife ponds. It feeds voraciously on mosquito larvae at the water surface, making it a natural and pesticide-free solution for reducing mosquito populations. Females are noticeably larger than males and produce live young regularly, making self-sustaining pond colonies easy to establish.
Tolerates a wide range of water conditions but prefers warm, calm surface water. Hardy in Belgian summers; must be overwintered in a frost-free aquarium or heated greenhouse pond as it does not survive prolonged freezing. Can be aggressive toward very small fish and shrimp.
