About

Potamotrygon motoro is a large, disc-shaped elasmobranch native to the Orinoco and Amazon river basins of South America. It requires pristine water quality, very large footprint tanks, and a deep sandy substrate for resting and hunting. Its barbed tail spine is venomous and can inflict a serious wound; all maintenance must be conducted with great care.

Care Guide

Water: 24-28°C, pH 6.0-7.0, very soft and acidic; zero ammonia and nitrite, nitrates below 20ppm. Tank: Minimum 700L, very wide footprint (at least 150cm width), deep fine sand substrate, no sharp décor. Feeding: Carnivore; live and frozen earthworms, prawns, mussel, fish pieces; feeds from the substrate. Behaviour: Generally peaceful with large fish; venomous tail spine — handle with extreme caution. Compatibility: Large peaceful fish that don't compete for substrate; large catfish, large characins.
