Potamotrygon motoro x leopoldi
Also known as: Motoro x Leopoldi Hybrid Stingray, Black Diamond Motoro Hybrid
Origin: South America (captive bred)
The Potamotrygon motoro x leopoldi hybrid is a captive-bred cross produced by pairing the Xingu Black Diamond ray (P. leopoldi) with the Ocellate River ray (P. motoro). The offspring display extraordinary pattern variation: some individuals develop white spots with orange halos, others show more leopoldi-like white spotting on dark ground, and others lean toward the motoro pattern with darker disc colouration. Every individual differs, making the offspring a uniquely collectible proposition. Hybrid vigour appears to apply: these individuals tend to be robust feeders. Husbandry follows standard potamotrygonid protocol with warm, soft, clean water, fine sand, and a carnivore diet. Both parent species are legally kept in Europe and captive-bred hybrids present no CITES complications.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft to moderate (2–10 dGH); zero ammonia/nitrite; frequent water changes. Tank: Minimum 600L, fine sand, open wide base, efficient external or sump filtration. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, prawn, mussel, bloodworm; typically vigorous and reliable feeders. Breeding: Captive-bred hybrids are themselves fertile in many cases; backcrosses also produced. Compatibility: Large, calm fish suitable; avoid boisterous or inquisitive species that stress the ray.
