Betta pugnax
Origin: Malaysia, Singapore
Betta pugnax is a paternal mouth-brooding wild betta from clear, flowing rainforest streams in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, where it inhabits rocky and sandy substrates with moderate current. Unlike bubble-nesting bettas, the male incubates eggs and developing fry within his buccal cavity for 2–3 weeks. Its subtle brown and green patterning is accented by iridescent blue scale edges that shimmer in natural lighting. A rewarding species for intermediate aquarists seeking to observe natural wild-type betta behavior.
Provide a mature, well-planted aquarium with gentle to moderate flow and hiding places among rocks and driftwood. Maintain soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic water. Feed live and frozen invertebrates: bloodworms, daphnia, and artemia. The male should not be disturbed during mouthbrooding.
