Apistogramma sp. 'Maulbruter'
Also known as: Mouthbrooder Apisto, Maulbruter Apistogramma
Origin: South America
Apistogramma sp. Maulbruter is one of the very few mouthbrooding members of the genus Apistogramma, making it a unique find for hobbyists interested in cichlid reproductive biology. The female broods eggs and fry in her mouth rather than in a substrate cave. It requires soft, acidic water and should ideally be kept in a dedicated species tank.
Water: 25-29°C, pH 5.0-6.5, soft (GH 1-5); stable, clean conditions crucial. Tank: 60L minimum, sand substrate, caves and plants even though mouthbrooder. Feeding: omnivore — live/frozen micro foods; quality micro-pellets once established. Behaviour: less territorial than cave-spawning apistos; still maintain pair or trio. Compatibility: species tank strongly recommended for observation of brooding behaviour.
