Corydoras osteocarus
Also known as: Mouthspot Cory, Osteocarus Cory
Origin: Venezuela (Orinoco tributaries)
Corydoras osteocarus is a medium-sized cory from the Orinoco tributaries in Venezuela, recognised by a dark spot situated very close to the corner of the mouth — a subtle but consistent feature useful for identification alongside its spotted flank pattern. The body is cream to pale tan with evenly distributed dark spots and a slightly darker dorsal region.
This species inhabits clear Orinoco tributaries with sandy and leaf-littered substrates and moderately fast flow. It is associated with the Guiana and Venezuelan shield drainages where water tends to be slightly soft and acidic. In the aquarium it adapts reasonably well to standard tropical conditions and is not as demanding as true blackwater species.
C. osteocarus is almost never seen in the mainstream trade and is a genuine rarity for collectors. It is peaceful, social, and rewarding to keep once established. Keep in groups of six or more, maintain clean water with low nitrates, and provide a fine substrate with some natural decoration.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.2, temperature 23–27°C; clean, stable Orinoco-style water parameters. Tank: 60 L minimum with fine sand, driftwood, and moderate plant cover. Feeding: Sinking micro-wafers, frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, and Tubifex. Breeding: Not documented; typical cory protocol; conditioning with live foods recommended. Compatibility: Peaceful with all Venezuelan and Orinoco community species.
