Periophthalmus barbarus
Also known as: Mudskipper, Atlantic Mudskipper
Origin: West Africa, Atlantic mangroves
Periophthalmus barbarus is an Atlantic mudskipper found in West African mangrove mudflats. Unlike most fish, it is equally at home on land as in water, using its strong pectoral fins to 'walk' and skip across mud. It requires a paludarium-style setup with a dedicated land area, brackish water, and high humidity.
Water: 24–30 °C, pH 7.5–8.5, specific gravity 1.005–1.015; mudflat-style paludarium. Tank: 200 L minimum with a sloped mud/sand bank comprising at least 40% of total tank area. Feeding: Carnivorous; crickets, mealworms, bloodworm, and shrimp; feeds almost entirely on land. Behaviour: Highly territorial on land; males perform elaborate fin-raising displays; best kept alone or in pairs. Compatibility: Species tank only; aggressive toward conspecifics and will eat small tankmates.
