Corydoras multimaculatus
Also known as: Multi-spotted Cory, Many-spotted Cory
Origin: Brazil, Argentina (Paraná River basin)
Corydoras multimaculatus is an attractively patterned species from the Paraná River basin in southern Brazil and northern Argentina. Its pale cream to beige body is densely covered in small, clearly defined dark brown spots that extend from the snout to the caudal fin base and continue onto the dorsal and adipose fins, creating a classic 'leopard' effect on a compact frame.
This southern-origin species is slightly cooler-water tolerant than many Amazon-basin cories, reflecting the subtropical character of the Paraná drainage. It is an adaptable fish in the aquarium and does well across a range of standard community water parameters, making it accessible to beginners while remaining interesting enough for experienced hobbyists who appreciate less commonly traded species.
C. multimaculatus is entirely peaceful, school-oriented, and an effective substrate forager. It is an excellent choice for community tanks and will not disturb plants or other inhabitants. Regular partial water changes, a fine substrate, and varied feeding will keep this species healthy and visually striking.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 20–25°C; tolerates cooler conditions than most Amazon cories. Tank: 60 L minimum with fine sand, some planting, and a few hiding spots; good for subtropical setups. Feeding: Sinking pellets, Repashy Community Plus, frozen bloodworm, and blanched vegetables. Breeding: Typical cory spawning; cool water change especially effective given the subtropical origin. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; suitable for mixed-temperature setups with goldfish or subtropical species.
