Neolamprologus multifasciatus
Also known as: Multifasciatus Shell Dweller, Multi Shell Dweller
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Neolamprologus multifasciatus is arguably the most popular shell-dwelling cichlid, originating from vast Neothauma shell beds in the shallow sandy areas of Lake Tanganyika. Colonies consist of a dominant male with multiple females, each occupying her own shell. The sight of a colony of multis busily carrying and arranging shells is endlessly entertaining. Ideal for a 40L+ species tank.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water. Tank: 40L minimum; fine sand substrate at least 5cm deep; provide 2-3 Neothauma or escargot shells per fish. Feeding: Micro-pellet, crushed flake, or baby brine shrimp; small frequent meals preferred. Behaviour: Colony with dominant male guarding multiple females; each female defends her shell fiercely. Compatibility: Best as a species tank; upper-water Cyprichromis or Paracyprichromis in larger set-ups.
