Melanotaenia fluviatilis is native to the Murray-Darling basin, Australia's largest river system, where it inhabits a wide variety of habitats from clear streams to turbid floodplain lakes. Its tolerance for cooler temperatures and variable water chemistry makes it one of the most adaptable melanotaeniids. A lively, colourful schooling fish that is ideal for those new to keeping rainbowfish.
Water: 15–26°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate hardness. Tank: 100 L+, open swimming space, tolerates cooler temperatures. Feeding: Omnivore; flakes, pellets, and occasional frozen/live foods. Behaviour: Active, peaceful, lively schooling fish that can handle seasonal temperature drops. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; compatible with many cool-tolerant Australian natives.
