Pseudogastromyzon myersi
Also known as: Myers' Pseudogastromyzon, Myers' Hillstream Loach, Hong Kong Hillstream Loach
Origin: China, Hong Kong
Pseudogastromyzon myersi is a small but energetic hillstream loach native to the clear, swift-flowing streams of Hong Kong and southern China. It was described in honour of the renowned American ichthyologist George S. Myers and is characterised by orderly rows of dark spots arranged across its pale body — a more regular patterning than many of its congeners. The species is closely related to P. cheni and has similar care requirements, with both occurring in cooler, well-oxygenated upland streams.
In the aquarium, P. myersi is a persistent and efficient algae grazer that works diligently from morning until lights-out. It is well-suited to planted hillstream aquaria where algae are present on rocks and hardscape, and its modest size means a group of five can be comfortably housed in 70 litres. Like all hillstream loaches it is intolerant of poor water quality and stagnant zones.
This species is one of the more readily available Chinese hillstream loaches and is a sensible choice for keepers stepping up from the Borneensis Gastromyzon or Chinese Butterfly Loach. Its manageable size and tolerant temperament make it a good addition to mixed hillstream communities.
Water: 18–24°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 4–15, KH 2–8; moderate to high flow with good surface agitation; cool water is critical for long-term health. Tank: 70 L minimum; smooth rounded substrate; flat algae-coated stones preferred for grazing and territorial display. Feeding: Biofilm, diatoms, and green algae; supplement with spirulina wafers, algae discs, and blanched cucumber or courgette. Breeding: Eggs deposited under flat stones; condition with water changes and modest temperature reduction; fry require established biofilm. Compatibility: Peaceful; one of the better community hillstream species; mixes well with other cool-water loaches, danios, and mountain minnows.
