Myloplus rubripinnis
Also known as: Myloplus Redhook, Redhook Silver Dollar
Origin: Amazon basin, South America
Myloplus rubripinnis was recently moved from Myleus into the resurrected genus Myloplus following molecular phylogenetic work that reorganised the Serrasalmidae. It closely resembles Myleus rubripinnis rubripinnis in its vivid red anal fin and deep disc body but is recognised as a distinct taxon by specialist collectors.
Care is identical to the Myleus redhooks: large, well-oxygenated tanks, plant-based diet, and group housing. The reclassification means that both Myleus and Myloplus redhooks may appear in the trade, sometimes interchangeably labelled. Both are peaceful schooling fish of equal quality.
Not restricted under piranha laws.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft to moderately soft; Amazonian origin means soft, slightly acidic water preferred. Tank: Minimum 500L for a school; tall format; open swimming space; avoid soft plants. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina pellets and flake, blanched greens, vegetables, occasional fruit. Breeding: Egg-scattering species; red anal fin intensifies during spawning season. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent schooling companion for large cichlids and catfish.
