Parosphromenus nagyi
Also known as: Nagy's Licorice Gourami, Blue Licorice Gourami
Origin: Peninsular Malaysia
Parosphromenus nagyi is a rare and highly sought-after licorice gourami from blackwater streams in Peninsular Malaysia. Males in full breeding colouration are among the most brilliant of all Parosphromenus species, displaying extensive blue iridescence across the body and unpaired fins. The contrast against the dark banding is particularly striking.
Like all licorice gouramis, P. nagyi is a cave spawner that requires very soft, acidic blackwater conditions. It is a tiny fish rarely exceeding 3.5 cm and must be kept in a species-only aquarium where its small size and shy temperament are not exploited by other fish. Water quality must be impeccable — any deterioration in water chemistry rapidly affects colouration and health.
P. nagyi is considered Endangered. The Parosphromenus Project maintains a studbook for this species and encourages responsible captive breeding to preserve genetic diversity. Even experienced fishkeepers find consistent breeding success a rewarding challenge.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 4.0–6.5, ultra-soft (GH 0–4) — RO water with tannin supplementation strongly advised. Tank: 25–30 L nano species biotope with caves, Indian almond leaves, and gentle sponge filtration. Feeding: live daphnia, cyclops, micro bloodworm — micro pellets only reluctantly accepted. Breeding: cave spawner; male guards eggs and fans fry; excellent blackwater conditions required. Compatibility: species-only strictly recommended.
