Loricariichthys nudirostris
Also known as: Naked-nosed Loricariichthys, Naked-snouted Whiptail
Origin: South America (Brazil — Paraná-Paraguay system)
Loricariichthys nudirostris is native to the Paraná and Paraguay river systems in Brazil and is anatomically distinguished from all other Loricariichthys species by its notably unarmoured, 'naked' rostral region — the snout area lacking the bony plates present elsewhere on the body. This unique morphological feature is reflected in its species name (nudi = naked, rostris = snout) and makes it immediately identifiable.
The Paraná-Paraguay system is characterised by warm to moderately warm water with moderate flow and seasonal flooding. Loricariichthys nudirostris inhabits sandy and muddy bottomed sections of larger rivers, often in shallow marginal areas with submerged wood. In the aquarium it requires a large tank with a soft substrate and good filtration.
This species is not commonly available in the trade and is most often seen through specialist Loricariidae importers or hobbyist breeding networks. Its care requirements are similar to other Loricariichthys — omnivorous, peaceful, and reasonably adaptable once established.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 3–15); gentle to moderate flow. Tank: 150 L minimum; fine sand or mud-effect substrate; wood for shelter; open foraging areas. Feeding: Sinking pellets, algae wafers, frozen foods, blanched vegetables. Breeding: Undocumented in captivity; presumed shelter spawner. Compatibility: Peaceful; La Plata or Paraná biotope community aquarium ideal.
