Serrasalmus nalseni
Also known as: Nalseni Piranha, Orinoco Deep-body Piranha
Origin: Orinoco basin, Venezuela
Serrasalmus nalseni inhabits the middle and upper Orinoco basin of Venezuela and is characterised by a particularly deep body profile and attractive dark-speckled silver colouration with a bright red iris. It is exported only infrequently, making it a significant find for piranha specialists when it does appear.
Care mirrors other Orinoco Serrasalmus: soft, slightly acidic water, solo housing, and a meaty diet. The Orinoco origin means similar conditions to S. irritans and S. altuvei are appropriate. Its scarcity means specimens should be acquired only from reputable, legally compliant sources.
Piranha restrictions apply; confirm local laws before purchase.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.0-7.0, soft to moderately soft (1-10 dGH); Orinoco origin favours slightly acidic, soft conditions. Tank: Minimum 400L; driftwood and cave structures; powerful external filtration; secure lid. Feeding: Whole prawns, fish fillet, lance fish; feed every 2-3 days using long feeding tongs. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Solo housing mandatory; piranha ownership is restricted in many regions — confirm before purchase.
