Nannocharax ansorgii
Also known as: Ansorge's Darter Tetra, African Darter
Origin: West Africa, Angola to Nigeria
Nannocharax ansorgii is a small, secretive Citharinid from the slow-moving, leaf-littered streams and swamps of West Africa, ranging from Angola to Nigeria. It spends most of its time near the substrate, using its cryptic brown-and-cream mottled patterning to blend into fallen leaves and fine sediment. Its body shape is elongated and somewhat flattened ventrally, adapted to resting on the bottom.
In the aquarium, this species requires a fine sand or very smooth substrate, generous leaf litter, and low to moderate flow. Dense planting or floating cover helps replicate the shaded, tannin-stained conditions of its natural habitat. Soft, slightly acidic water is preferred for long-term health.
Nannocharax ansorgii is peaceful and can be kept with other small, gentle West African species. Its diet in captivity should consist of small live and frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm, daphnia, and baby brine shrimp, supplemented with high-quality micro-pellets.
Water: Soft and slightly acidic, pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 22–26°C, GH 1–8, KH 0–4. Tank: Minimum 60 L with fine sand, leaf litter, low flow, and dim lighting. Feeding: Omnivore; frozen bloodworm, daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and high-quality micro-pellets. Breeding: Egg scatterer on substrate; soft water and fine sand substrate used; fry tiny. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable with small West African nano fish and non-aggressive bottom dwellers.
