Nannoptopoma cf. spectabile
Also known as: Nannoptopoma cf. spectabile, Undescribed Dwarf Loricariid
Origin: South America
Nannoptopoma cf. spectabile is a trade designation for a tiny loricariid that closely matches N. spectabile in size and spotting but originates from a different or unconfirmed locality, or differs in subtle morphological details that preclude confident species assignment. Such undescribed or unconfirmed forms are not uncommon within the otocinclus alliance, where species diversity has outpaced formal taxonomic description.
The care and biology of this form mirror those of the nominotypical N. spectabile in all practical respects. It is an extremely small loricariid — barely 3 cm — with a distinctive bold spotted body pattern and the same behavioural ecology as related species: social, diurnal, herbivorous grazer of biofilm and soft algae in soft, warm Amazonian stream habitats. Its tiny size restricts it to fine surface feeding rather than the coarser algae processing possible for larger species.
For collectors and nano-fish enthusiasts, this undescribed form carries the additional appeal of scientific novelty — the fish kept today may ultimately prove to represent a new species upon formal description. Husbandry is identical to N. spectabile: small tank with established biofilm, excellent water quality, supplemental fine foods, and the company of appropriately tiny tank mates.
Water: Soft, slightly acidic at pH 5.5–7.0 and 22–27°C; impeccable water quality essential for this tiny species. Tank: 40 litres minimum; densely planted with established biofilm on all surfaces. Feeding: Fine algae wafers, blanched vegetables cut small, and established biofilm; consistency critical. Breeding: Not documented; may parallel N. spectabile requirements. Compatibility: Suitable only with the smallest, most peaceful nano species and invertebrates.
