About

Nannoptopoma spectabile is a tiny jewel among the loricariids — reaching barely 3 cm, it is one of the smallest armoured catfishes available to aquarists. Despite its diminutive size, it is visually striking: bold dark spots or blotches over a pale cream to tan body give it a pattern that belies its small stature. The genus name Nannoptopoma means 'dwarf Hypoptopoma', reflecting its close relationship to the slightly larger free-swimming loricariids.

In the wild, N. spectabile is associated with the soft, warm, slightly acidic waters of the Brazilian Amazon system, where it is found grazing on submerged wood, leaf litter, and aquatic plant surfaces in shallow stream margins. Its very small size means it is almost exclusively associated with fine surface biofilm and soft algae rather than the coarser growth that larger grazers can process. It occurs in groups and is highly social.

In the aquarium, Nannoptopoma spectabile is a premium nano species that suits the most carefully maintained planted aquaria. Its size makes it compatible with even the smallest nano tank mates, and its bold markings make it conspicuous despite its tiny dimensions. Water quality must be impeccable, supplemental feeding must be consistent, and the aquarium must have well-established biofilm for this species to thrive long-term.

Care Guide

Water: Soft, slightly acidic at pH 5.5–7.0 and 22–27°C; very sensitive to water quality — zero ammonia and nitrite; nitrates below 10 ppm. Tank: 40 litres minimum with dense planting, driftwood, and established biofilm; avoid strong flow. Feeding: Biofilm is essential; fine algae wafers crumbled near grazing surfaces and blanched vegetables cut small. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Ideal with the smallest nano species; shrimp-safe; avoid anything that could outcompete it for food.
