Nanochromis nudiceps

Nanochromis nudiceps inhabits the middle and lower Congo River, favouring slow-flowing or calm sections with sandy substrates and submerged woody debris. Its specific name ('nudiceps' = bare/naked crown) refers to the scaleless patch on top of the head, a diagnostic feature of this species. Breeding males develop a striking lyrate caudal fin with blue and red pigmentation, making them stand out in any Congo biotope aquarium.

This species is a cavity-spawner, depositing eggs within tight rock or wood crevices. Both parents participate in brood care, though the female tends to spend more time inside the spawning cavity. The species requires soft, slightly acidic water and does best in tanks decorated with sandy substrate, flat rocks, and smooth driftwood pieces that create suitable spawning sites.

PH stability in the soft, acidic range (5.5–6.8) is key to long-term success with N. nudiceps. The Congo River is among the world's softest major rivers, and water chemistry should reflect this.

Water: 24–27°C, pH 5.5–6.8, very soft (GH 1–8, KH 1–4); RO or rainwater blending recommended in hard-water areas. Tank: 60 L minimum; sand substrate, flat rocks, and smooth driftwood for cavity spawning sites. Feeding: Quality micro pellets, flake, and regular small live or frozen foods — brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, and bloodworm. Breeding: Cavity-spawner; both parents defend fry — remove tankmates when spawning is detected. Compatibility: Peaceful with small, fast-moving schooling fish; avoid other bottom-dwelling cichlids.
