Nanochromis sp. 'Ubangi'

Nanochromis sp. 'Ubangi' is an undescribed species collected from the Ubangi River system along the DR Congo–Central African Republic border. It stands out from other Nanochromis by its noticeably deeper body, more rounded head profile, and warm ochre-to-orange lateral colouration on the flanks, making it one of the more visually distinctive undescribed forms in the genus.

Hobby availability is extremely limited, arising from infrequent collector expeditions to the Ubangi drainage. Care broadly follows that of other Nanochromis — soft, slightly acidic water, cavity-spawning, and pairs requiring their own territory. This species appears somewhat bolder and more visible in the aquarium than related Nanochromis.

Soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–6.8) is recommended, along with a well-decorated tank providing suitable spawning crevices. This is a fish for the dedicated Congo/Central African biotope enthusiast.

Water: 24–27°C, pH 5.5–6.8, soft (GH 1–8, KH 1–4). Tank: 60 L minimum; rock crevices, sand substrate, driftwood and leaf litter. Feeding: Live or frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworm; quality nano pellets when settled. Breeding: Cavity-spawner; isolate pair in species tank for breeding; both parents active in fry defence. Compatibility: Species tank recommended; cautious pairing with very small, non-competitive upper-level fish.
