Nassarius spp.
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Nassarius snails (Nassarius spp.) spend most of their lives buried in the sandbed, emerging rapidly when they detect food. They are exceptional substrate cleaners and waste processors, aerating the sandbed while consuming detritus. Their eruption from the sand at feeding time is one of the most entertaining behaviors in a reef tank.
Requires a deep sand substrate to burrow into. Supplement diet with meaty foods sunk to the substrate. Reef-safe. Cannot right themselves if flipped on glass or rock — assist if needed. Excellent for preventing anaerobic dead zones in deep sand beds.
