Nassarius sp.
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Nassarius snails are the gold standard for marine sandbed maintenance, burying themselves completely in the substrate during the day and emerging with remarkable speed when they detect meaty foods. Their vigorous burrowing aerates the sandbed continuously, preventing the buildup of anaerobic zones and noxious hydrogen sulphide gas in deeper substrate layers. Completely reef-safe and harmless to corals and fish, they are an essential component of any marine cleanup crew.
Maintain a fine sand bed of at least 5 cm for natural burrowing behaviour. Feed by target-feeding meaty foods such as frozen mysis or fish flesh near their burrows 2–3 times per week. Ensure adequate sandbed space: 1 snail per 5 L of tank capacity. Keep away from copper-based medications.
