Geophagus neambi
Also known as: Neambi Eartheater, São Francisco Eartheater
Origin: Brazil (São Francisco basin)
Geophagus neambi is a relatively recently described eartheater endemic to the São Francisco river basin of eastern Brazil — a biogeographically isolated drainage that has produced many endemic species. It displays attractive lateral banding and vivid blue-green iridescent cheek spots that intensify under stress or during courtship. The species inhabits sandy-bottomed stretches of moderate to fast-flowing river tributaries. It is a delayed mouthbrooder that forms loose spawning aggregations. Water quality is important, as the São Francisco basin has naturally low organic content compared to Amazonian rivers. Provide a fine sand substrate, moderate flow, and open areas for sifting. Compatible with other moderately sized, peaceful species from South American rivers.
Water: Soft; pH 5.8–7.2, temperature 24–28 °C, good oxygenation. Tank: 200 L minimum; fine sand, moderate flow, open areas. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen daphnia, cyclops, and bloodworm. Breeding: Delayed mouthbrooder; spawns in loose groups. Compatibility: Peaceful; keep with large tetras or other eartheaters.
