Myleus torquatus
Also known as: Necklace Myleus, Collared Myleus
Origin: Amazon basin, South America
Myleus torquatus takes its species name from the dark collar-like marking behind the nape that gives it the 'necklace' appearance. It is a large-bodied, disc-shaped schooling serrasalmid from the central Amazon, developing rich colouration in mature males including reddish fin tones during spawning condition.
Like other large Myleus, it demands significant space and excellent filtration. The herbivorous diet is easily met with a variety of plant-based foods. It is peaceful toward all non-aggressive tankmates and makes an impressive centrepiece in a large South American community.
Not subject to piranha restrictions.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft water preferred (2-10 dGH); consistent, clean water conditions are critical for large adults. Tank: Minimum 700L; powerful filtration; open swimming lanes; tall format suits the deep body. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina pellets, blanched vegetables, lettuce, fruits; daily feeding of varied plant matter. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; nuchal collar and fin colour intensify in breeding males; rarely bred in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal companion for large Amazonian cichlids, plecos, and other Myleus species.
