Neetroplus nematopus
Also known as: Neetroplus, Poor Man's Tropheus
Origin: Central America
Neetroplus nematopus is the sole member of its genus and is found in the rocky littoral zones of Lakes Nicaragua and Managua, as well as associated rivers. Despite reaching only 12 cm, it is legendarily aggressive and territorial — capable of driving off and harassing much larger cichlids when defending a territory or brood. It is a fascinating biotope species for aquarists who appreciate behaviour over size, and is excellent in single-species or carefully managed large mixed setups.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard (GH 10–20). Tank: 120L for a pair; heavily structured with rocks and caves; territory division is critical. Feeding: Omnivore; grazes algae in the wild; spirulina flakes and pellets with frozen supplement. Behaviour: Extremely aggressive relative to size; territorial toward all species; fierce brood protection. Compatibility: Species-only or with much larger, robust fish that will not be intimidated or damaged.
