About

Neolamprologus helianthus derives its name from its sunflower-yellow body colouration, which is uniform across the flanks and intensifies to deep gold on the belly and lower fins of dominant males. It is one of the rarer Lamprologines, known from only a handful of localities along the eastern shoreline of Lake Tanganyika, which limits its availability in the aquarium trade.

Despite its rarity, helianthus is not particularly demanding in captivity. It adopts the same shell-dwelling lifestyle as its congeners, selecting a single shell as its home base and defending a compact territory around it. Pairs spawn inside the female's shell, and both parents share territorial defence duties to some degree, which is slightly more cooperative than is typical for the genus.

This species does best in a dedicated species tank or alongside calm open-water Tanganyikans that do not compete for benthic space. Water conditions must be hard, alkaline, and clean. The yellow colouration fades noticeably in soft or acidic water, so ensuring adequate hardness and buffering is important for maintaining the fish at its best.

Care Guide

Water: pH 7.8–9.0, GH 12–20, KH 8–16, temperature 24–27 °C; hardness critical for colour retention. Tank: 40 L minimum; fine sand; 3–4 shells per fish; minimal decor to spotlight colouration. Feeding: Frozen Artemia, Daphnia, Cyclops; quality micro pellets with colour-enhancing formula. Breeding: Shell-spawner; cooperative brood defence; fry accept Artemia nauplii; small clutches of 10–20 eggs. Compatibility: Best as a species tank; compatible with Cyprichromis or Paracyprichromis in larger tanks.
