Neolamprologus modestus
Also known as: Tanganjicae Modestus, Sandy Shell Cichlid
Origin: Lake Tanganyika
Neolamprologus modestus 'Tanganjicae' is a sandy-zone cichlid that occupies open shell beds and sandy flats throughout Lake Tanganyika. The fish is creamy-tan with rows of subtle dark scaling and an unpretentious but pleasing appearance that suits its calm demeanour. It is among the most peaceful Lamprologines and can be housed with a wider variety of tankmates than the more aggressive shell-dwelling species.
In the aquarium, modestus uses shells primarily for shelter rather than spawning, though it will spawn inside a shell if no more suitable crevice is available. It is less reliant on shells than brevis or similis and appreciates having both shell and rock options. The male defends a territory but rarely escalates disputes beyond jaw-locking.
For beginners entering the Tanganyika hobby, modestus 'Tanganjicae' is an excellent gateway species — forgiving of slight water parameter fluctuations, accepting of a wide range of foods, and fascinating to observe as it excavates and rearranges the substrate around its territory.
Water: pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–18, KH 8–14, temperature 24–27 °C; tolerates minor parameter variation. Tank: 60 L minimum; fine sand; mix of shells and flat rocks; moderate filtration. Feeding: Accepts pellets, flake, and frozen foods readily; feed twice daily. Breeding: Cave or shell-spawner; female tends clutch; male guards territory; fry accept micro foods. Compatibility: One of the most peaceful Lamprologines; good choice for mixed Tanganyika community tanks.
